Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
Fugitive Slave Act of 1850: Stated that slaves could be caught and returned to their owners and anyone who assisted a fugitive slave could be prosecuted. Repealed in 1864.

Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln: Sixteenth president of the United States, he was a Republican. Lincoln's decision to fight was not based on his feelings towards slavery, but that he felt it was a sacred duty as Presdient of the United States to protect the Union at all costs. Lincoln's first inagural address was ended with: "Shall it be peace or the sword?"

George McClellan
George McClellan: U.S. Army officer, was the general-in-chief of the Union Army. Abraham Lincoln removed McClellan from command in late 1862. In 1864 he'd go on to compete against Lincoln in a presidency campaign, and he lost.

Ulysses S. Grant
Ulysses S. Grant: Served as the 18th U.S. from 1869-1877. After the Civil War, Grant worked on civil rights for newly freed black slaves. Grant was given all command of the U.S. armies, he was said to be an aggressive and determined leader.

William Tecumseh Sherman
William Tecumseh Sherman:Possibly the first originator and practitioner of what the 20th Century came to know as "total war." Lead the "march to the sea'" across Georgia, Sherman was also responsible for delivering the death blow to the Confederacy's will and ability to fight.
